IN THIS LESSON
AYisan questions, “you were brought so that Your light would show the way, not the shadows of those that came before you. Are you ready to learn and lead?
Ayizan (eye-ZON or eye-ee-ZON) is the wife of Papa Loko and is sometimes called the first mambo. She is generally only approached during Kanzo ceremonies as the owner and keeper of the djevo or ritual seclusion space/temple, and palm fronds are especially sacred to her. Sometimes Ayizan is depicted as a shrewd old woman who owns the market and the concepts of economy and commerce. Much of the time, Ayizan is not given a saint’s image, as she is embodied in the sacred palm fronds used in initiation ceremonies; in those situations where she is given an image, it is sometimes the image of the silent but strong Saint Clare of Messina.
